The Osram 64615 HLX is a single-ended, low-voltage Xenophot tungsten halogen MR16 reflector lamp engineered for demanding dental curing, medical imaging, microscopy, fiber optic illumination, and 8mm projection applications. Its xenon gas fill delivers up to 10% greater luminous efficiency versus standard halogen at the same wattage. The white dichroic (cold mirror) reflector passes infrared heat forward through the back of the lamp while directing cool visible light toward the subject — a critical feature for heat-sensitive dental and medical procedures. With a perfect CRI of 100, precision filament alignment, and instant-on performance, it is a trusted standard replacement across a wide range of professional equipment.

Understanding the White Dichroic (Cold Mirror) Reflector

A standard reflector lamp directs both visible light and infrared heat toward the subject. The white dichroic reflector in this lamp works differently — it reflects visible light forward toward the work area while allowing infrared (heat) radiation to pass through the back of the reflector and dissipate away from the subject. This "cold light" effect is especially important in dental curing and surgical applications, where minimizing heat at the point of illumination protects both patients and sensitive materials.

What Makes Xenophot (HLX) Different?

Standard halogen lamps use krypton as the filling gas. Osram's Xenophot lamps substitute xenon, which reduces the rate of tungsten evaporation and allows the filament to operate at a higher temperature. This produces up to 10% more lumens per watt compared to a conventional halogen of the same wattage, and delivers nearly constant luminous flux throughout the lamp's rated life. Xenophot lamps are identified in Osram's catalog by the prefix HLX.

Important Safety & Installation Notes

  • Burn Position is Critical: This lamp must be operated horizontally within ±15° of true horizontal only. Installing at any other angle will cause overheating, dramatically shorten lamp life, and may cause lamp failure.
  • Short Rated Life is By Design: The 50-hour lifespan is normal and expected for high-intensity medical and dental halogen lamps. The trade-off for CRI 100, precise optical output, and cold mirror performance is a shorter service interval. Stocking spare lamps is strongly recommended.
  • Enclosed Fixtures Only: Must be used exclusively in approved, fully enclosed halogen fixtures. Do not use in open or unshielded housings.
  • No Bare Hands: Never touch the lamp envelope or the surface of the reflector with bare skin. Oils from your fingers create hot spots that cause premature failure. Use clean gloves or a lint-free cloth during installation.
  • Verify Working Distance: The focal length of this lamp is 32mm. Equipment calibrated for a different focal length will not perform correctly. Always match the replacement lamp's working distance to your equipment's specification.
