Product Overview

Official Sylvania Lighting Logo - ADL Supply

The Sylvania 21916 FO40/841/XP/ECO3 Octron 800 XP Ecologic 5-Foot T8 Fluorescent Lamp is a high-output linear fluorescent replacement tube engineered for commercial and industrial relamping projects requiring ANSI C78.81 compliance. Operating at 40 watts with a 4100K cool white correlated color temperature and 85 CRI, this extra-long 60-inch T8 lamp delivers 3,750 initial lumens and 3,525 mean lumens, making it ideal for high-ceiling office complexes, retail environments, schools, and cold-storage display cases. The Octron 800 XP Ecologic series is built with reduced mercury content and is compatible with both magnetic rapid-start ballasts designed for 265 mA T8 operation and high-frequency electronic instant-start, rapid-start, or programmed rapid-start ballasts.

ADL Supply Expert Application & Replacement Guide

When retrofitting existing T12 or older T8 installations, verify that the ballast is rated for 265 mA T8 operation per ANSI C78.81 standards. Please note that this is a specialized 5-foot (60-inch nominal) linear tube; it will not fit standard 4-foot commercial fixtures. Magnetic rapid-start ballasts must be specifically designed for 40W T8 lamps; do not install on standard F40T12 magnetic ballasts. For electronic ballast retrofits, confirm the ballast factor falls between 0.71 and 1.20 at nominal input voltage. In instant-start configurations, bridge the two socket contacts together per National Electric Code techniques and ensure minimum open-circuit voltage of 550V RMS. In cold-storage or freezer applications below 60°F, expect potential striation or brightness reduction—this is non-damaging and will resolve once ambient temperature stabilizes. For 3-hour cycle operation, rated life is 36,000 hours; extending operating cycles yields proportional life increases.

Operation, Safety & Mounting Compliance

Ballast Compatibility & Electrical Requirements

This lamp must be operated only with magnetic rapid-start ballasts designed for 265 mA T8 lamps, or high-frequency electronic ballasts that are instant-start, rapid-start, or programmed rapid start specifically designed for T8 operation. When operated in instant-start mode, the two wires or contacts of each socket must be connected together and then to the appropriate ballast lead wire using National Electric Code techniques. Ballast factors must range from 0.71 to 1.20 at nominal input voltage. SUPERSAVER lamps require F32T8 ballasts with minimum open-circuit voltage of 550V RMS. Not recommended for remotely ballasted fixtures below 550V open-circuit voltage, rapid-start ballasts below 570V, air-handling fixtures, low power factor ballasts, or inverter-operated emergency systems unless specifically listed.

Warm-Up & Restrike Operation

Approximate initial lumens are measured after 100 hours of operation. Mean lumens are measured at 40% of average rated lamp life. Minimum starting temperature is a function of the ballast; consult the ballast manufacturer for low-temperature starting specifications. If an operating lamp is exposed to drafts or ambient temperature falls below 60°F (70°F for 25W variants), striation (a rhythmic pulsing pattern running down the tube) and/or brightness reduction may occur. This behavior is not damaging to the lamp; removing the cause returns the lamp to normal operation.

Operating Cycle & Life Rating

Life ratings are based on 3-hour operating cycles under specified conditions with ballasts meeting ANSI specifications. If the operating cycle is increased, there will be a corresponding increase in average hours of life. Do not operate on dimming circuits unless the ballast is explicitly rated for T8 dimming.
