Pulse-Start Ballast, G12 Base & Enclosed Fixture Requirement

The ANSI M139/M85 pulse-start ballast requirement means the ballast must generate a 3.5–5.0 kV ignition pulse to strike the ceramic arc tube — probe-start metal halide ballasts and standard quartz MH ballasts are not compatible. The G12 bi-pin ceramic socket must be rated for the 250°C maximum base temperature; standard plastic or thermoplastic sockets are not suitable and will fail at CMH operating temperatures. Maintain the maximum 5V voltage-rise limit between the ballast output and the lamp socket by keeping wiring runs short and using adequate wire gauge. This lamp must be installed in an enclosed fixture — while the UV-protective quartz envelope reduces (but does not eliminate) UV emission, the fixture enclosure provides mandatory mechanical containment. A cracked or damaged outer envelope requires immediate lamp replacement. Allow a 15-minute cool-down before accessing the lamp after operation.
