The GE LED17BDT5/G3/830 Type B LED Tube is a 3-foot, 17W double-ended T5 replacement lamp rated at 2,300 initial lumens and 3000K color temperature. As the High Output (HO) version of GE's T5 Type B line, it is built for the 3ft length where maximum lumen output per fixture matters. As a Type B lamp, it is a ballast-bypass design: the fixture must be rewired to run the tube directly off line voltage, and it cannot be installed into a fixture that still has its fluorescent ballast in the circuit.

GE's Type B T5 tubes bypass the ballast entirely, which is why the fixture has to be rewired to run line voltage directly to the lamp sockets before this 34-inch, 17W tube is installed. Removing the ballast from the circuit eliminates it as a future point of failure and as a stocked spare part, but it also means this lamp will not light, and can pose a hazard, if it is dropped into a fixture that has not been converted.

The internal safety switch and misapplication circuit built into this lamp are there specifically to reduce risk during that rewiring step and during future relamping by someone unfamiliar with the fixture's ballast-bypass status. GE also offers an optional in-line fuse kit, ordered separately, for facilities that want an extra layer of protection against a future relamp mistake.

This length is not on the DLC Qualified Products List, unlike the 4ft tube in the same series, so a rebate-driven retrofit should confirm eligibility before this SKU is substituted into a project scoped around the 4ft version.

Compatible Applications

• Retrofitting 3ft T5 fluorescent fixtures (HO or HE lamp/ballast combinations) that are being converted to ballast-bypass LED
• Damp-location fixtures — the tube itself is Damp Location rated, though the fixture's own rating still governs the installation
