GE LED Tube Type B T8 U1 (1-5/8" Leg) 13W 4000K – LED13BDT8/U/840

The GE LED13BDT8/U/840 Type B LED Tube is a U-bend, 13W double-ended T8 replacement lamp rated at 1,850 initial lumens and 4000K color temperature. It uses the U1 configuration with fixed 1-5/8" leg spacing between tube ends — the same industry-standard spacing as a legacy U-bend fluorescent tube, but not interchangeable with the wider U6 (6") spacing used elsewhere in GE's Type B U-bend line. As a Type B lamp, it is a ballast-bypass design: the fixture must be rewired to run the tube directly off line voltage, and it cannot be installed into a fixture that still has its fluorescent ballast in the circuit.

Product Overview

GE's Type B U-bend tubes bypass the ballast entirely, which is why the fixture has to be rewired to run line voltage directly to the lamp sockets before this 13W tube is installed. Removing the ballast from the circuit eliminates it as a future point of failure and as a stocked spare part, but it also means this lamp will not light, and can pose a hazard, if it is dropped into a fixture that has not been converted.

The internal safety switch and misapplication circuit built into this lamp are there specifically to reduce risk during that rewiring step and during future relamping by someone unfamiliar with the fixture's ballast-bypass status. GE also offers an optional in-line fuse kit (order code 39017), sold separately, for facilities that want an extra layer of protection against a future relamp mistake.

This is the U1 (1-5/8" leg spacing) lamp, matching the leg spacing on most legacy U-bend fluorescent troffers. GE also offers a U6 (6" leg spacing) version of this same wattage and CCT range under a different order code — confirm the fixture's actual leg spacing before ordering, since a U1 lamp physically will not fit a U6-spaced fixture and vice versa.

Compatible Applications

  • Retrofitting U-bend (2ft x 2ft) T8 fluorescent troffers with 1-5/8" leg spacing that are being converted to ballast-bypass LED
  • Damp-location fixtures — the tube itself is Damp Location rated, though the fixture's own rating still governs the installation
  • Open or enclosed troffers already wired or being rewired for direct line voltage

Before Ordering – Verify

  • Confirm the fixture has been rewired for ballast bypass — this lamp cannot power on, and may create a hazard, in a fixture still wired through its fluorescent ballast
  • Confirm leg spacing is 1-5/8" (U1), not 6" (U6) — the two are not interchangeable and the wrong one physically will not fit the lampholders
  • Confirm supply voltage matches 120-277V
  • Sockets can be shunted or non-shunted — no socket replacement is required for this double-ended Type B design
  • If the project depends on a utility rebate, verify this exact model number on the DLC Qualified Products List, not just the product family

Safety and Handling Guidelines

  • Glass lamp — handle and store to avoid impact or breakage; do not use if the tube is cracked
  • De-energize the fixture before installing or removing the lamp, and before performing the ballast-bypass rewiring
  • Label the fixture as ballast-bypass / direct-wire so future relamps are not attempted with a standard fluorescent tube
  • Dispose of the removed fluorescent ballast per local electrical waste regulations; it is not reused with this lamp

Compliance

  • UL 1993 Listed for LED lamps
  • Damp Location rated
  • DLC Qualified Products List — confirm this exact model at designlights.org before relying on it for a rebate
