Product Overview
The Philips 236935 is a 330W Energy Advantage CDM lamp with AllStart technology, designed as a direct energy-saving replacement for standard 400W metal halide lamps on existing ANSI C185/O pulse-start ballast infrastructure. At 330W, the lamp draws approximately 18% less power than the 400W standard MH it replaces while delivering 31,000 nominal lumens at 94 lm/W — significantly higher efficacy than the standard 400W quartz MH lamps typically producing 36,000 lumens at 90 lm/W. Design mean lumens are 23,250, reflecting the superior lumen maintenance of ceramic arc tube technology over the 24,000-hour rated life.
At 4000K (nominal 3950K) and 86 CRI with a Saturated Red R9 value of 75, the CDM330 delivers substantially better color rendering than standard quartz MH (typically 65–70 CRI) — making it suited to commercial, retail, and institutional high-bay applications where both energy savings and improved color quality are specified. The coated ED37 glass envelope diffuses the arc source for more uniform luminance across the outer bulb surface.
The EX39 Exclusionary Mogul Screw base is a deliberate design feature: the modified base geometry prevents standard E39 mogul-base MH or HPS lamps from being installed into the same socket, ensuring that only compatible Energy Advantage CDM lamps are used in fixtures retrofitted for this platform. AllStart technology provides reliable starting performance across the lamp’s life. The “O” rating indicates a protected outer envelope design compliant with FDA radiation performance standard 21 CFR 1040.30.
Compatible Applications
- Commercial and industrial high-bay lighting (replacing 400W standard MH)
- Retail and big-box store general lighting
- Warehouse and distribution center high-bay fixtures
- Institutional and educational gymnasium and auditorium lighting
- Parking structure and covered area lighting
- Any enclosed ANSI C185/O fixture with EX39 socket currently running 400W standard MH
Before Ordering – Verify
- ANSI ballast code: C185/O. This lamp requires a pulse-start ballast rated for ANSI C185/O. It is designed to operate on 400W MH pulse-start ballasts at reduced wattage (330W). Confirm the ballast ANSI code before ordering; probe-start ballasts and ballasts coded for other ANSI designations are not compatible.
- Base type: EX39 Exclusionary Mogul Screw. This is NOT a standard E39 mogul base — the EX39 has a modified geometry that prevents standard E39 lamps from being installed. Confirm the fixture socket has been converted to or originally equipped with EX39. Standard E39 lamps will not seat in an EX39 socket, and this EX39 lamp will not seat in a standard E39 socket.
- Enclosed fixture required. UV radiation hazard: if the outer envelope is broken or punctured while the arc tube operates, shortwave UV can cause serious skin burns and eye inflammation. Do not use where people will remain for more than a few minutes without adequate shielding.
- Hot restart: Allow a minimum of 15 minutes cool-down after a power interruption before the lamp re-ignites. Plan for this delay in critical applications.
- Ignition time: Up to 120 seconds to full ignition. AllStart technology provides reliable starting but the initial warm-up period is longer than some instant-start alternatives.
- Dimensions: 11.5″ MOL × 4.625″ diameter (ED37 envelope). Confirm the fixture housing accommodates these dimensions.
Safety and Handling Guidelines
- This lamp contains mercury (50 mg max); do not dispose of in municipal solid waste — manage in accordance with disposal laws (www.lamprecycle.org or 1-800-555-0050)
- R-class UV warning (FDA 21 CFR 1040.30): This lamp can cause serious skin burn and eye inflammation from shortwave UV radiation if the outer envelope is broken or punctured. Do not use where people will remain for more than a few minutes unless adequate shielding or other safety precautions are used.
- The “O” rating indicates a protected outer envelope, but the fixture must still be enclosed with UV-shielding glass
- Allow full cool-down before relamping; allow the 15-minute minimum hot restart interval after power interruptions
- Do not handle the outer bulb with bare skin; use clean gloves or handle by the base
Compliance
- ANSI C185/O Certified
- FDA 21 CFR 1040.30 compliant (“O” rated — protected outer envelope)
- Canada: SOR/DORS/80-381
- Contains mercury (50 mg max) — subject to federal and state lamp disposal and recycling regulations
- Enclosed fixture required
- LEED: 90 pg/lm·h mercury per lumen hour
