Product Overview

Mercury vapor remains in service across a large installed base of older commercial, industrial, and municipal fixtures, and the deluxe white version of the 250W lamp is the one specified where color appearance matters. The phosphor coating on the inside of the ED28 envelope converts part of the arc tube’s ultraviolet output into visible red, which is exactly what the bare mercury spectrum lacks. GE rates the result at 50 CRI and notes the family delivers higher color rendering than standard high pressure sodium, which is the practical reason a facility would keep mercury vapor in a space where people and materials are being looked at rather than simply illuminated.

Output is 11,200 initial lumens falling to 7,840 mean lumens, at a nominal 44 lumens per watt. Rated life is 20,000 hours in any burning position, and the lamp is approved for both open and enclosed fixtures. Warm-up to 90% output takes about five minutes from cold; after a momentary power interruption the arc tube must cool before it will restrike, which takes three to six minutes. That restrike delay is inherent to the technology and is why mercury vapor is not appropriate as the sole source in areas where a brief outage cannot be tolerated.

The lamp requires a properly rated mercury vapor ballast matched to ANSI code H37. GE specifies an open circuit voltage of 318 V for a peak lead ballast or 225 V for an RMS lag ballast. Before Ordering – Verify

• Confirm the fixture uses a mercury vapor ballast rated for ANSI H37. A metal halide or high pressure sodium ballast of the same wattage will not operate this lamp correctly and may destroy it. Mercury vapor lamps have no starter and rely entirely on the ballast open circuit voltage.
• Confirm the finish. This is the deluxe white (DX) phosphor-coated version at 3900K and 50 CRI. The clear version of the same 250W H37 lamp has different color characteristics and is a different product code.
• Confirm the base is E39 mogul screw, not E26 medium.

Safety and Handling Guidelines

• R-WARNING: this lamp can cause serious skin burn and eye inflammation from shortwave ultraviolet radiation if the outer envelope is broken or punctured and the arc tube continues to operate. Do not use where people will remain for more than a few minutes unless adequate shielding or other safety precautions are used. Self-extinguishing lamp types that shut down on envelope breakage are commercially available.
• Turn power off if the glass bulb is broken; remove and dispose of the lamp.
• Turn power off before inspection, installation, or removal.
• Do not use the lamp if the outer glass is scratched or broken.
• Do not turn the lamp on until it is fully installed, and do not use excessive force when installing.
• Allow the lamp to cool before handling; risk of burn.
• Do not exceed rated voltage, and do not operate beyond rated life.
• Use only a properly rated ballast, and use the lamp only in a fixture rated for this product.
• Keep combustible materials away from the lamp and do not store flammable materials near or below it.
