Product Overview

Osram HTI 250 W/22 — 270W HTI Metal Halide Short-Arc Reflector Lamp, 45V, 5600K, 22mm Mounting Distance, Light Guide Optimized
The Osram HTI 250 W/22 is a metal halide short-arc discharge lamp built into a focusing dichroic reflector and optimized for injecting light into light guides. It operates at a rated 270W, 45V, and 6A, produces a 5600K daylight-balanced arc from a 2.3mm electrode gap, and has an average service life of 250 hours. The mounting distance between the front ceramic ring of the reflector and the fiber input is 22mm — the "22" in the product name — and the luminous area is optimized for light guides larger than 1mm in diameter. The reflector measures 67mm in diameter with an overall lamp length of no more than 73mm. This version uses pin connections of 2mm and 2.5mm diameter; a cable-and-plug version is available separately as the HTI 250 W/22 C. Forced-air cooling and an enclosed lamp housing are required. Confirm the mounting distance, electrical connection type, and power supply before ordering.

Product Overview
The HTI 250 W/22 is a short-arc metal halide lamp whose arc tube is mounted inside a focusing dichroic reflector. The very small 2.3mm electrode gap concentrates a large amount of light into a near-point emitter, which is what makes the source suitable for optical systems that need to gather light from a tiny origin and deliver it into a small aperture. The dichroic reflector coating passes infrared out through the back of the reflector rather than forward with the beam, which substantially reduces the heat delivered to the fiber input.
This lamp is built for light guide coupling rather than area illumination. The defining dimension is the 22mm mounting distance between the front ceramic ring of the reflector and the input face of the fiber. That distance is where the reflector brings the light to its tightest concentration, so positioning the fiber anywhere else drops coupling efficiency sharply. The luminous area is optimized for light guides larger than 1mm in diameter, and Osram identifies endoscopy as the primary application field.
Operating values are 270W at a rated 45V and 6A. Ignition requires 4.5 kV cold or 20 kV hot, so a matched ignitor is part of the system. For best luminous efficiency and light stability — which endoscopy in particular requires — the lamp should be run on electronic control gear. Operation on standard ballasts is possible for less critical applications, but some lamp parameters will be reduced.
Cooling is not optional. The lamp requires forced air from a fan, directed horizontally from the side so that it passes through the gap in the front and rear ceramic rings, and the base temperature must not exceed 230°C. The burning position is horizontal within ±20 degrees with the current bar vertical. Average service life is 250 hours, which is normal for short-arc discharge sources of this class where arc precision and output stability matter more than service interval.
Compatible Applications
- Medical endoscopy light sources — the primary application field for this lamp
- Industrial borescopy and remote visual inspection equipment
- Fiber optic and liquid light guide illuminators
- Light guide systems using guides greater than 1 mm diameter
- Laboratory and scientific instrumentation requiring a stable 5600K point source
- Light guide systems in the entertainment sector
- Replacement lamp for equipment originally specified with the HTI 250 W/22
Before Ordering — Verify
- Confirm the equipment specifies the 22mm mounting distance version. The mounting distance is the number in the product name and it determines where the fiber input must sit relative to the reflector. The HTI 250 W/32C is a different lamp in the same family with a 32mm dimension and is not a substitute.
- Confirm the electrical connection type. This version has pins of 2 mm and 2.5 mm diameter. If the equipment uses a cable and plug-in contact, the correct order reference is HTI 250 W/22 C with an AMP 350809-1 connector.
- Confirm the power supply. Electronic control gear is recommended for best efficiency and light stability, and is effectively required for endoscopy. Standard ballasts will operate the lamp but with reduced parameters.
- Confirm the ignitor can deliver 4.5 kV cold and 20 kV hot.
- Confirm the light guide diameter is greater than 1 mm. The luminous area is optimized for guides above that size.
- Confirm the housing provides fan cooling with horizontal side air flow through the front and rear ceramic ring gaps, and that base temperature stays below 230°C.
- Confirm the equipment permits a horizontal burning position within ±20 degrees with the current bar vertical.
- Confirm the reflector envelope fits: 67 mm diameter, 73 mm maximum overall length.
- Note the 250-hour average service life when planning spares and maintenance intervals.
- Confirm mercury shipping and disposal requirements for the destination.
Safety and Handling Guidelines
- HTI short-arc lamps produce very high luminance, emit UV radiation, and operate under high internal pressure. They may only be operated inside an enclosed lamp housing constructed for the purpose, with filtering that reduces UV radiation to an acceptable level.
- Never look directly at an operating arc. The luminance can cause eye injury.
- Never operate the lamp without the specified forced-air cooling. Loss of airflow allows the base temperature to exceed 230°C and can cause lamp failure.
- Disconnect power and allow the lamp to cool completely before handling or replacement. Short-arc lamps remain under high pressure while hot.
- Do not touch the quartz arc tube or the reflector optical surfaces with bare hands. Skin oils cause localized heating and can lead to failure.
- Wear appropriate eye and face protection when handling a short-arc lamp, and follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions for installation and alignment.
- Metal halide lamps contain mercury, which is released if the lamp breaks. Special safety precautions must be taken in the event of breakage.
- Do not operate the lamp beyond its rated service life without evaluating the risk of end-of-life failure in a pressurized short-arc lamp.
- Dispose of the lamp in accordance with local regulations for mercury-containing lamps. See lamprecycle.org for recycling information.
