Product Overview

Ceramic metal halide is what displaced tungsten halogen in high-end retail and hospitality accent lighting, and the MASTERColour CDM-TC Elite is Philips’ long-life version of that lamp. The ceramic arc tube holds its color point far better than a quartz metal halide tube, which is what allows a 90 CRI rating and consistent appearance between adjacent fixtures across the life of the installation. The Elite designation refers to the extended life package: 12,000 hours to 5% failures and 20,000 hours to 50% failures when run on electronic gear.

Output is 4000 lumens rated nominal, 3600 lumens rated minimum, at 102 lumens per watt. Note that the 35W in the product name is the nominal wattage designation; actual nominal power draw is 39.1 W. Lumen maintenance is 93% at 2,000 hours, 88% at 5,000 hours, 80% at 10,000 hours, and 78% at 12,000 hours, so a maintained-illuminance calculation should be run against the point in life the design targets rather than the initial figure.

Two operating characteristics matter at design time. The lamp is not dimmable, so anywhere the design calls for level control this is the wrong source. And like all metal halide it needs time: up to 30 seconds to ignite, 1.5 to 3 minutes to reach 90% output from cold, and up to 15 minutes to re-ignite once hot. A momentary power interruption means the space goes dark for a quarter of an hour. The lamp requires ceramic metal halide control gear supplying an ignition peak of up to 5000 V, operates in any position, and is designed for luminaires holding bulb temperature at or below 500 °C and pinch temperature at or below 300 °C.

Compatible Applications

  • High-end retail and showroom display lighting, where 90 CRI renders merchandise accurately
  • Architectural accent and feature lighting
  • Museum, gallery, and exhibition illumination
  • Hotel lobbies, restaurants, and hospitality interiors
  • Track-mounted and recessed CMH luminaires using a G8.5 bi-pin socket
  • Replacement of tungsten halogen accent lighting, where efficacy and lamp life are the objective
  • Any burning position, including horizontal and base-up orientations
  • Installations on ceramic metal halide electronic control gear rated for ANSI C130/E

Before Ordering – Verify

  • Confirm the control gear is rated for ANSI C130/E. This lamp requires ceramic metal halide gear delivering an ignition peak voltage of up to 5000 V at a 198 V ignition supply. It will not operate on a quartz metal halide, mercury vapor, or high pressure sodium ballast.
  • Confirm the design does not require dimming. This lamp is not dimmable.
  • Confirm the 15-minute hot re-ignition delay is acceptable for the space. If a momentary outage cannot leave the area dark, the design needs a supplementary instant-restrike source.
  • Confirm the socket is G8.5 bi-pin. G12, GU6.5, and PGJ5 sockets are used by other CDM lamps and are not interchangeable.
  • Confirm fixture clearance against a 15 mm maximum diameter and an 85 mm maximum overall dimension.
  • Confirm the color code. This is 930 — 90 CRI at 3000K. The same lamp is offered in other color codes, and mixing color points within one space is visible.
  • Confirm the luminaire holds bulb temperature at or below 500 °C and pinch temperature at or below 300 °C.
  • Confirm the fixture is suitable for a clear, unfiltered CMH lamp given the published UV damage factor of 0.3, particularly where sensitive artwork, textiles, or merchandise are displayed.
  • This item is packed 1 lamp per pack, 12 packs per outer box.

Safety and Handling Guidelines

  • Switch off and isolate the circuit before installing or replacing the lamp, and allow it to cool fully first — the bulb operates at up to 500 °C.
  • Do not handle the quartz or ceramic envelope with bare hands; skin oils create hot spots that shorten lamp life. Use a clean cloth or gloves.
  • Seat both G8.5 pins fully and squarely; do not apply force to the pinch seal.
  • Metal halide arc tubes operate under high pressure and can rupture at end of life. Use only in a luminaire designed and rated for this lamp type.
  • This is a clear, unfiltered lamp with a published UV damage factor. Do not operate where people or UV-sensitive materials are exposed for extended periods without appropriate luminaire shielding.
  • Do not operate the lamp beyond its rated life; the risk of non-passive failure rises after that point.
  • Do not exceed the maximum bulb and pinch temperatures specified for luminaire design.
  • The lamp contains 4.7 mg of mercury. Recycle or dispose of spent lamps according to federal, state, and local regulations, and handle breakage with appropriate precautions.
  • Installation should be performed by a qualified person in accordance with applicable electrical codes.
