Product Overview

Philips Advance IOP-1P32-LW-N — Optanium Instant Start Electronic Ballast, 1-Lamp 32W T8, 120-277V
The Philips Advance IOP-1P32-LW-N is a Optanium electronic fluorescent ballast that operates up to 1 32W T8 lamps using the instant start method. Input is IntelliVolt® 120V to 277V, 50/60 Hz. Driving 1 lamp, it draws 25W ANSI input power at a ballast factor of 0.77, with line current of 0.22-0.10 A and total harmonic distortion of 10 percent maximum. Minimum starting temperature is -20/-29°F/°C. The ballast is high power factor and sound rated A. It operates F32T8, FBO31T8, and F32T8/U6 lamps. Confirm lamp type, lamp count, starting method, ballast factor, and supply voltage against the fixture before ordering.

Advance electronic ballast catalog numbers encode the input voltage, ballast family, maximum lamp count, wiring configuration, primary lamp wattage, case description, and connector option in sequence. Reading the number tells you most of what you need before checking the data table.
Product Overview
Instant start ballasts apply a high open-circuit voltage to strike the lamp without preheating the cathodes. This gives the lowest input power and the highest system efficacy of the common starting methods, which is why instant start is the default choice where lamps run for long, uninterrupted periods. The tradeoff is cathode wear at each start, so instant start suits spaces that are not switched frequently. Where fixtures are on occupancy sensors or are switched several times a day, a programmed start ballast will deliver longer lamp life.
Optanium is the Advance high-efficiency line, engineered to reduce input power and system losses against comparable ballasts while holding lamp performance. Within the range, LW (low watt) variants reduce ballast factor and input power together, and HL (high light output) variants raise both.
Ballast factor is the specification that most often determines which catalog number is correct. This unit is rated at 0.77, meaning lamp output is approximately 77 percent of the lamp's rated lumens. Selecting a lower ballast factor reduces input power and light output together; a higher one raises both. Substituting one for the other after a lighting layout has been designed will change light levels in the space. Input power for this configuration is 25W ANSI, with line current of 0.22-0.10 A and THD held to 10 percent maximum.
Minimum starting temperature is -20/-29°F/°C. Below that point the ballast may not reliably strike the lamps, so it matters in unconditioned warehouses, parking structures, coolers, and exterior canopy fixtures. Check the coldest expected ambient at the fixture, not the room average.
IntelliVolt® input means one catalog number covers every supply voltage in the 120-277V range. For a distributor or a facility running mixed 120V and 277V service, that reduces the number of ballasts that have to be stocked to cover a building.
Related catalog numbers in the same family and voltage class: IOPA-1P32-LW-N, IOP-1P32-N, IOPA-1P32-N, IOP-1P32-HL-N, IOPA-1P32-HL-N, IOP-2P32-LW-N, IOPA-2P32-LW-N, IOP-2P32-N, IOPA-2P32-N, IOP-2P32-HL-N. These differ in lamp count, starting method, ballast factor, or case style and are not interchangeable without checking the specification.

Before Ordering — Verify
- Confirm the lamps are F32T8, FBO31T8, or F32T8/U6 32W lamps. This ballast will not operate T12 or T5 lamps.
- Confirm lamp count. This ballast operates up to 1 lamp. Operating fewer lamps than rated changes input power and ballast factor — check the manufacturer table for the configuration you are using.
- Confirm the starting method. Instant Start is not interchangeable with the other methods. Instant start gives the lowest input power but shortens lamp life under frequent switching; programmed start protects lamp life on sensor-controlled fixtures.
- Confirm supply voltage is within IntelliVolt® 120V to 277V, 50/60 Hz.
- Confirm ballast factor. This unit is 0.77. Substituting a different ballast factor changes light levels in the space.
- Confirm the coldest expected ambient at the fixture is at or above the minimum starting temperature of -20/-29°F/°C.
- Confirm the enclosure accommodates a case figure N ballast. Refer to the manufacturer dimension drawings for the exact case size.
- Refer to manufacturer wiring diagram reference 63 and follow it for the lamp count being installed.
- Confirm lead length and connector requirements for the fixture. Lead lengths and shipping data are published separately by the manufacturer.
Safety and Installation Guidelines
- Disconnect power at the breaker before removing the old ballast or making any connections.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local requirements.
- Ground the ballast case.
- Follow the wiring diagram supplied with the ballast for the lamp count being installed. Wiring differs between 1-lamp, 2-lamp, and 3-lamp configurations.
- Cap and insulate any unused leads when operating fewer lamps than the ballast is rated for.
- Do not exceed the rated input voltage range.
- Verify all lamps in a fixture are the same type and wattage. Mixing lamp types on one ballast can cause premature failure.
- Allow the ballast and fixture to cool before handling after operation.
- Verify all connections before restoring power.
- Fluorescent lamps contain mercury. Handle and dispose of lamps in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements.
