U-bend lamps exist because a 2 by 2 foot troffer cannot take a 4 foot straight tube. Bending a 32W T8 back on itself puts the same lamp length into roughly half the fixture footprint, which is why U-bends are standard in square troffers across offices, schools, retail, and healthcare. This is the 6 inch leg spacing version — the wider of the two common geometries and not interchangeable with narrow-spacing lamps.

ECOLOGIC is SYLVANIA’s designation for lamps engineered to pass the Federal TCLP test, which governs whether a spent lamp is classified as hazardous waste. Combined with lead-free construction and RoHS compliance, that simplifies disposal for facilities managing a large lamp population. Mercury content is 7.5 mg. Before Ordering – Verify

• Confirm the leg spacing is 6 inches. U-bend T8 lamps are made in both 6 inch and 1-5/8 inch leg spacing, and they are not interchangeable — the lampholders in the fixture sit at a fixed distance. This is the most common ordering error on U-bend lamps.
• Confirm the ballast type, because rated life depends on it. This lamp is rated 28,000 hours on programmed rapid start and 24,000 hours on instant start.
• Operate on electronic fluorescent ballasts. For maximum energy savings, SYLVANIA recommends electronic instant start ballasts.
• For rapid start operation, check with the ballast manufacturer regarding ground plane requirements.
• Confirm the color temperature. This lamp is 3000K, light color 830. It is also offered in 3500K and 4100K, and mixing color temperatures within one ceiling is immediately visible.
• Confirm the lampholder is G13 medium bi-pin.
• Confirm fixture clearance against a 22.6 in. overall length and 26 mm tube diameter.
• Confirm the starting temperature. The lamp starts down to 0 °F depending on the ballast, and operation below 50 °F may affect lumen output or lamp operation.
• Confirm mercury handling and disposal arrangements; this lamp contains 7.5 mg.

Safety and Handling Guidelines

• Switch off the circuit before installing or replacing the lamp.
• Allow the outgoing lamp to cool before removal.
• Support a U-bend lamp by both legs during handling. The bend is the weakest point and the lamp will flex if carried by one end.
• Seat both bi-pin ends fully and rotate until the lamp locks in both lampholders.
• Do not force a lamp into holders set at a different leg spacing; that will crack the seals.
• Operate only on electronic fluorescent ballasts suited to T8 lamps.
• Do not use the lamp if the glass is scratched, cracked, or broken.
• This lamp contains mercury. Dispose of according to local, state, or federal laws, through an approved lamp recycler rather than in general waste.
• In the event of breakage, ventilate the area, avoid vacuuming, and follow local guidance for cleanup of a broken fluorescent lamp.
• Installation should follow all applicable national and local electrical codes.
