Sylvania 54173 50MR16/IR/FL35/C — TRU-AIM® IR MR16 50W 12V Halogen Infrared Reflector Lamp, GU5.3 Base, 35° Flood, 3000K, CRI 100

The Sylvania TRU-AIM® IR 50MR16/IR/FL35/C (item number 54173) is a 50W 12V low-voltage tungsten halogen MR16 reflector lamp with an infrared reflective coating on the capsule. It uses a GU5.3 bi-pin base, produces a 35° flood beam at 2850 centerbeam candlepower, and delivers 3000K light at CRI 100 with an average rated life of 5,000 hours. A UV-control capsule combined with the IR coating eliminates UV-B and UV-C radiation, and the hard coated dichroic reflector holds its color point across the life of the lamp rather than shifting. An axial filament produces an exceptionally smooth beam pattern, and the lamp is supplied with a clear cover glass for use in unshielded fixtures. Maximum overall length is 1.750 in with a 2 in reflector diameter. Note that 50W TRU-AIM IR lamps require good ventilation at the lamp neck and are not a direct replacement for a standard 50W MR16. Confirm the beam angle, base, transformer capacity, and fixture ventilation before ordering.

Product Overview

TRU-AIM IR lamps achieve their efficacy through thermal recovery. The tungsten halogen capsule is ellipsoidal and carries an infrared reflective coating, so radiated heat that would otherwise be lost is reflected back onto the filament. Because that heat is recycled inside the capsule, less electrical energy is needed to bring the filament to its operating temperature — which is how these lamps reach the centerbeam output that a higher wattage standard dichroic MR16 would require. Sylvania states that TRU-AIM IR lamps are a direct replacement for higher wattage standard dichroic MR16s with a reduction in energy consumption.

The filament is axially aligned between the focal points of the ellipsoidal capsule, with a return lead wire routed back down the center of the filament to optimize infrared reflection without interfering photometrically. Xenon fill gas in the burner further raises luminous intensity and efficacy. The practical result is an exceptionally smooth beam pattern without the striations or hot spots a transverse filament can produce.

Two features matter for merchandise and artwork. The hard coated dichroic reflector holds its color point across the life of the lamp instead of drifting, so a display relamped in year three still matches one relamped in year one, and lamps in adjacent fixtures match each other. The UV-control capsule combined with the IR coating eliminates UV-B and UV-C radiation, which reduces fading on UV-sensitive merchandise, textiles, and artwork. Together with a color rendering index of 100, that makes these lamps a common specification for retail display, galleries, and museum casework.

This item is the 35° flood at 2850 centerbeam candlepower. Beam angle is the specification that most often determines which item number is correct, because centerbeam intensity changes substantially with beam spread at the same wattage. Other beam angles in the 50W family are item 54175 (Narrow Spot 10°, 15,000 cd), item 54174 (Narrow Flood 25°, 5700 cd), item 54237 (Wide Flood 60°, 1430 cd). The lamp is supplied with a clear cover glass, which is what the /C suffix denotes and what makes it suitable for unshielded fixtures where an uncovered MR16 would not be permitted.

Compatible Applications

  • Highlighting merchandise and retail display lighting
  • Accent and display lighting in track and adjustable downlight fixtures
  • Highlighting heat sensitive merchandise
  • Art galleries and museum casework, where UV control and color consistency matter
  • Hotels and restaurants
  • Decorative room lighting and ambient lighting
  • Case lighting strips and display cabinetry
  • Landscape lighting fixtures on 12V systems
  • Unshielded fixtures requiring a covered lamp
  • Energy-saving replacement for a higher wattage standard dichroic MR16

Before Ordering — Verify

  • Confirm the beam spread required. This lamp is the 35° flood (FL) at 2850 cd. Other beam angles in the 50W family are item 54175 (Narrow Spot 10°, 15,000 cd), item 54174 (Narrow Flood 25°, 5700 cd), item 54237 (Wide Flood 60°, 1430 cd).
  • Confirm the wattage tier. The same 35° beam is also made as item 58533 (20W, 1000 cd), item 58633 (37W, 2200 cd).
  • Confirm the socket is GU5.3 bi-pin with 1/4 in maximum pin spacing. GU5.3 is not interchangeable with GU10 or other MR16 base types.
  • Confirm the fixture is supplied by a 12V transformer or low-voltage supply. This lamp will not operate on line voltage.
  • Confirm the transformer capacity accommodates 50W per lamp across the total lamp count.
  • Confirm the fixture accepts a 2 in diameter MR16 with a 1.750 in maximum overall length, including the cover glass.
  • Confirm whether a covered lamp is required. This item includes a clear cover glass; uncovered versions are separate order codes.
  • Confirm fixture and socket ventilation at the lamp neck. Sylvania states that 50W TRU-AIM IR MR16 lamps should not be used in semi-enclosed or enclosed fixtures that inhibit air flow in the neck area, or in sockets that inhibit air flow there. Lamp life may be short if the neck is not well ventilated.
  • Do not treat this lamp as a direct replacement for a standard 50W MR16. Sylvania specifically advises against that substitution for the 50W IR lamp because of the additional capsule heating.
  • Confirm case quantity — this item is supplied 20 per case.

Safety and Handling Guidelines

  • Disconnect power and allow the lamp to cool completely before handling or replacement. Halogen lamps run hot and stay hot well after switch-off.
  • Do not touch the capsule or reflector glass with bare hands. Skin oils cause localized overheating and can lead to premature failure. Clean with isopropyl alcohol if the glass is touched.
  • Handle the lamp by its reflector body or base, not the capsule.
  • Ensure the lamp neck is well ventilated. Do not install this 50W IR lamp in a semi-enclosed or enclosed fixture, or in a socket, that inhibits air flow in the neck area. Infrared conserving capsules recycle heat through the capsule glass twice and run hotter than a standard halogen capsule of the same wattage.
  • Operate on a 12V supply only. Overvoltage operation sharply reduces lamp life.
  • Do not install a lamp with a cracked, scratched, or otherwise damaged reflector or cover glass.
  • Keep combustible materials clear of the lamp and fixture.
  • Follow the fixture manufacturer's instructions for lamp orientation and any position restrictions.
  • This lamp contains no mercury. Recycle or dispose of it in accordance with local requirements.

Compliance

  • UV-B and UV-C radiation eliminated by the UV-control capsule combined with the infrared coating.
  • ECOLOGIC® designated — part of the Osram Sylvania program addressing environmental issues across lamp life.
  • Contains no mercury. Not subject to mercury lamp disposal or shipping restrictions.
  • Dispose of in accordance with local regulations.
