Product Overview

Sylvania 40494 LED8T8/L24/FP/850/SUB/G8 — SubstiTUBE® IPS 2 ft T8 LED Tube, 8W, 1250 Lumens, 5000K
The Sylvania LED8T8/L24/FP/850/SUB/G8 (item number 40494) is a 2 ft SubstiTUBE® IPS LED T8 lamp with a G13 medium bi-pin base, designed to operate on the fixture's existing instant start or select programmed rapid start electronic T8 ballast. It draws 8W and produces 1250 initial lumens at 5000K and 83 CRI, for a bare lamp efficacy of 156 lumens per watt, with a rated life of 50,000 hours to L70. The lamp body is shatterproof frosted nano plastic rather than glass, contains no mercury or lead, and emits no UV. Because this is a ballast-compatible lamp rather than a ballast-bypass lamp, no rewiring is required — but the existing ballast must appear on the manufacturer ballast compatibility list. Confirm ballast model, lamp holder type, and fixture length before ordering.

System values are rated on a QHE2x32T8/UNV ISN ballast operating two lamps. Actual performance varies with the ballast installed.
Replacing a 2 ft 17W T8 system drawing 29W with this lamp on a QHE 2X32T8/UNV ISN-SC ballast brings system wattage to 20W, an energy saving of approximately 31%.
Product Overview
SubstiTUBE IPS lamps are ballast-compatible LED tubes. They install into the existing fixture and run off the electronic ballast already in place, with no rewiring, no socket changes, and no electrician required for the retrofit itself. That makes the installed cost substantially lower than a ballast-bypass conversion, and it eliminates the fluorescent lamp recycling that a mercury-containing lamp would require. The tradeoff is that the ballast remains in the circuit as a component that consumes power and can eventually fail, and the lamp is only warranted on ballasts that appear on the manufacturer compatibility list.
Unlike fluorescent lamps, these are not affected by switching cycles, so occupancy and vacancy sensors can be added to the existing instant start ballast without shortening lamp life. There is no warm-up period — the lamp reaches full output instantly and holds stable lamp-to-lamp color. The frosted nano plastic body is shatterproof and will not break the way a glass LED or fluorescent tube does, which is why the family carries an NSF/ANSI Standard 2 listing for food equipment areas.
This order code is factory-set to 5000K at 1250 initial lumens. Other color temperatures in the same 2 ft 8W family are LED8T8/L24/FP/830/SUB/G8 (3000K, item 40491), LED8T8/L24/FP/835/SUB/G8 (3500K, item 40492), LED8T8/L24/FP/841/SUB/G8 (4100K, item 40493). The beam angle is 160 degrees with a 340 degree light emitting area, giving a distribution closer to a fluorescent tube than to a directional LED lamp.
Compatible Applications
- Fluorescent troffer and strip fixture retrofits keeping the existing electronic ballast
- Offices, schools, and institutional corridors
- Retail sales floors and back-of-house areas
- Healthcare and hospitality spaces where shatterproof lamps are preferred
- Food preparation and processing areas (NSF/ANSI Standard 2 listed)
- Spaces using occupancy or vacancy sensors on existing instant start ballasts
- Dry and damp locations, open or enclosed fixtures
Before Ordering — Verify
- Confirm the existing ballast appears on the Sylvania ballast compatibility list. Warranty coverage depends on the lamp and ballast combination being listed as compatible.
- Confirm the ballast is electronic instant start or select programmed rapid start. This lamp will not operate on magnetic ballasts.
- Confirm the ballast is not an older dedicated-voltage type (120V only or 277V only) and is less than ten years old. Aging electronic components in older ballasts may not drive this lamp correctly.
- Confirm lamp holder type. Instant start ballasts require shunted lamp holders or holders wired in a shunted configuration; programmed rapid start ballasts require non-shunted rapid-start holders.
- Confirm de-lamping plans. De-lamping is not permitted on ISH ballasts. On approved ISN and ISL ballasts, only one lamp may be removed and only while ballast factor stays below 1.20 — for example, a 4-lamp ballast may be run with 3 lamps.
- Confirm the fixture will contain only these lamps. Mixing this lamp with other LED or fluorescent lamps on the same ballast is not permitted.
- Confirm fixture length. This is a 2 ft lamp with an overall length of 23.72" ± 0.055" (602.6mm).
- Color temperature — this item is 5000K. Siblings in the same family: LED8T8/L24/FP/830/SUB/G8 (3000K, item 40491), LED8T8/L24/FP/835/SUB/G8 (3500K, item 40492), LED8T8/L24/FP/841/SUB/G8 (4100K, item 40493).
- This item is not a designated dimmable model. If 0-10V dimming is required, the 13W 4 ft DIM versions (items 40591, 40592, 40593, 40594) are the dimmable models in this family.
- Confirm ambient conditions stay within -4°F to +104°F (-20°C to +40°C) and that the lamp will not come into direct contact with water.
- Confirm the ballast is mounted within 20 feet of the lamp.
- Confirm package quantity — this item is supplied 25 per package.
- Where a utility rebate is involved, confirm current DLC® status for this item at qpl.designlights.org. This family is classified DLC 5.1.
- Because ballast designs and topologies vary, test this lamp on the existing ballasts before committing to a large quantity.
Safety and Handling Guidelines
- Turn off power to the fixture before installing, inspecting, or maintaining lamps.
- Install and operate in compliance with the National Electrical Code, Underwriters Laboratories requirements, and all applicable local codes.
- Insert and align the tube fully in the lamp holders. Partial insertion causes poor or intermittent contact, which can produce arcing at the lamp holder, localized overheating, and short lamp life.
- Read the installation manual supplied inside the packaging before beginning installation.
- Do not install on magnetic ballasts, dedicated single-voltage ballasts, or ballasts more than ten years old.
- Do not mix this lamp with other LED or fluorescent lamps on the same ballast.
- Operate only in dry or damp locations. The lamp must not come into direct contact with water.
- Handle by the end caps. The nano plastic body is shatterproof but the lamp should still not be installed if visibly damaged.
- This lamp contains no mercury and no lead, and emits no UV. Recycle or dispose of it in accordance with local electronic waste requirements.
Compliance
- cULus listed.
- DLC 5.1 classified. Confirm current qualification at qpl.designlights.org.
- NSF listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 2 — Food Equipment.
- RoHS compliant.
- Lead free and mercury free; not subject to fluorescent lamp mercury disposal or shipping restrictions.
- No UV emission.
- 5-year limited lamp warranty based on 24/7 operation; NLB Trusted Warranty Program.
