GE 93295 CMH400/U/830/R — ConstantColor® ChromaFit™ 400W Ceramic Metal Halide ED18, E39 Mogul Base, ANSI S51/M169, HPS Ballast Retrofit

The GE ConstantColor® ChromaFit™ CMH400/U/830/R (product code 93295) is a 400W ceramic metal halide lamp designed to operate on an existing high pressure sodium ballast, allowing an HPS system to be upgraded to crisp white metal halide light without changing the ballast or the fixture. It uses a clear ED18 hard glass bulb on an E39 mogul screw base, produces 41,000 initial lumens at a nominal 102.5 lumens per watt, and delivers 3000K at CRI 82 in horizontal burn position. Rated life is 20,000 hours at 11 hours per start, and the lamp may be operated in any burning position. This lamp requires an ANSI S51/M169 ballast and must be installed in an enclosed fixture. It contains mercury and carries an FDA R-type ultraviolet warning. Confirm the ballast ANSI code, fixture enclosure, and burn position before ordering.

Product Overview

ChromaFit lamps solve a specific problem: a facility running high pressure sodium wants better color, but replacing ballasts and fixtures across a site is expensive. HPS produces a narrow orange-amber spectrum with poor color rendering, which makes it hard to distinguish colors, read labels, or identify vehicles and people accurately. This lamp is electrically matched to an HPS ballast so it can be dropped into the existing socket, but its ceramic metal halide arc tube produces crisp white light at 3000K with a color rendering index of 82 instead.

The retrofit is a lamp change only. No ballast change, no fixture change, no rewiring, no electrician time beyond the lamp swap itself. That makes the upgrade path viable for parking lots, industrial bays, and street lighting where a full fixture replacement could not be justified. Output is 41,000 initial lumens at a nominal 102.5 lumens per watt, holding 31,300 mean lumens at 40 percent of rated life.

Ceramic metal halide technology uses a polycrystalline alumina arc tube rather than quartz, which tolerates higher wall temperatures and holds color more consistently across the life of the lamp and from lamp to lamp than standard quartz metal halide. Rated life is 20,000 hours based on 11 hours per start, with universal burning position.

Burn position affects the light this lamp produces. Operated horizontally it runs 3000K at CRI 82; operated vertically it shifts to 3600K at CRI 80. Both are valid, but a site mixing horizontal and vertical fixtures will see a visible difference in color between them, so it is worth deciding the orientation before ordering rather than after.

Compatible Applications

  • High pressure sodium retrofits on existing S51/M169 ballasts, upgrading color without a fixture change
  • Industrial lighting and high bay fixtures
  • Parking lots and parking structures
  • Street lighting and roadway fixtures
  • Architectural and facade lighting
  • Landscape lighting
  • General area lighting in enclosed luminaires
  • Facilities where color recognition matters — security monitoring, inventory identification, and CCTV coverage

Before Ordering — Verify

  • Confirm the existing ballast is ANSI S51/M169. This is the 400W ChromaFit lamp. The 250W version (product code 93357, CMH250/U/830/R) runs on ANSI S50/M168 and the two are not interchangeable — installing a lamp on the wrong ballast code will not give rated performance or life.
  • Confirm the ballast is a magnetic HPS ballast of the correct code. This lamp must not be used on high frequency electronic ballasts.
  • Confirm the fixture is an enclosed type with a glass lens. This lamp is rated for enclosed fixtures only and must not be used in open fixtures.
  • Confirm the intended burn position. Horizontal operation yields 3000K at CRI 82; vertical operation yields 3600K at CRI 80. Mixing orientations across a site will produce visible color differences between fixtures.
  • Confirm the socket is E39 mogul screw and that the fixture accommodates a 9.760 in MOL, 2.300 in diameter ED18 lamp with a 5.750 in light center length.
  • Confirm the fixture is not directly exposed to water and is not used outdoors without an enclosure.
  • Note the restrike behavior. After a power interruption this lamp requires 10 to 15 minutes to return to 90 percent output, and 2 to 5 minutes to warm up from cold. Where instant restrike is required, a supplementary light source is needed.
  • Confirm mercury handling and disposal requirements. This lamp contains 38 mg of mercury and is subject to state and local disposal rules.
  • Confirm case quantity — this item is supplied 12 per case.

Safety and Handling Guidelines

  • R-type ultraviolet warning: this lamp can cause serious skin burn and eye inflammation from shortwave ultraviolet radiation if the outer envelope is broken or punctured and the arc tube continues to operate. Do not use where people will remain for more than a few minutes unless adequate shielding or other safety precautions are used. Self-extinguishing lamp types that shut down when the outer envelope is broken are commercially available as an alternative.
  • Turn power off immediately if the glass bulb is broken, even if the lamp continues to light. Remove and dispose of the lamp.
  • Use only in an enclosed fixture rated for this product, and only with a properly rated ballast.
  • Do not use where the lamp is directly exposed to water, or outdoors without an enclosed fixture.
  • Turn power off before inspection, installation, or removal, and do not switch the lamp on until it is fully installed.
  • Allow the lamp to cool completely before handling. Maximum bulb temperature is 400°C and maximum base temperature is 210°C.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves when handling this lamp. It may shatter and cause injury if broken.
  • Do not use excessive force when installing. Do not install a lamp whose outer glass is scratched or broken.
  • Keep combustible materials away from the lamp.
  • Do not exceed rated voltage and do not operate the lamp beyond its rated life. Unexpected lamp rupture may cause injury, fire, or property damage.
  • Operate the lamp only in the specified position for the fixture.
  • Dispose of the lamp in a closed container. This lamp contains mercury — dispose of it in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. See lamprecycle.org for recycling information.

Compliance

  • FDA R-type warning applies in accordance with Federal Standard 21 CFR 1040.3.
  • Contains 38.0 mg of mercury. Subject to mercury lamp handling, shipping, and disposal requirements, including state-level restrictions.
  • Rated for enclosed fixtures only.
  • Not for use on high frequency electronic ballasts.
  • Dispose of in accordance with local regulations for mercury-containing discharge lamps.
