Product Overview

Philips Advance IZT-2S54-D — Mark 7® 0-10V Dimming Electronic Ballast, 2-Lamp T5HO, 120-277V IntelliVolt®, Programmed Start
The Philips Advance IZT-2S54-D is a Mark 7® 0-10V electronic dimming ballast that operates two T5HO or compatible compact fluorescent lamps in a series lamp connection. Input is IntelliVolt® 120-277V at 50/60 Hz. It uses programmed start circuitry, which preheats the lamp cathodes before striking and extends lamp life in frequently switched applications. Dimming is controlled by a Class 1 or Class 2 low voltage 0-10VDC controller through separate violet (+) and grey (−) control leads drawing 10V at 0.5 mA. Operating two F54T5/HO lamps, input power ranges from 16W at minimum output to 118W at full output, with a ballast factor range of 0.03 to 1.00, power factor above 0.98 at full light output, and total harmonic distortion of 10 percent maximum. Minimum starting temperature is 50°F (10°C). Confirm lamp type, lamp count, control system compatibility, and supply voltage against the fixture before ordering.

Product Overview
The Mark 7® 0-10V family is Philips Advance's analog dimming ballast line. Dimming is commanded by a low voltage 0-10VDC signal on a pair of control leads separate from the line wiring, which is why these ballasts pair with such a wide range of equipment: wall dimmers, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting photosensors, and building management systems all speak 0-10V. The control circuit is Class 1 or Class 2, drawing 10V at 0.5 mA, on violet (+) and grey (−) leads.
Programmed start circuitry preheats the lamp cathodes to the correct temperature before applying striking voltage. That preheat sequence sharply reduces the cathode wear that occurs at each start, so lamp life holds up under frequent switching — which matters here because a dimming ballast is usually installed precisely where fixtures are being switched and adjusted often. This ballast will also ignite lamps at any light output setting without first jumping to another setting, so a fixture commanded to 20 percent starts at 20 percent rather than flashing to full first.
Two protection features are worth noting. Auto restart means the ballast restarts lamps on its own after a fault clears or a lamp is replaced, with no need to cycle power at the panel. Lamp end-of-life protection removes power from a T5, T5HO, or CFL lamp that has reached end of life, preventing the overheating and cycling a failing lamp otherwise produces. The ballast also carries integral protection against a low voltage control lead being accidentally connected to mains power — in that event it defaults to maximum light output rather than failing.
IntelliVolt® input means one catalog number covers 120V through 277V at 50/60 Hz with sustained variation of plus or minus 10 percent, reducing the number of ballasts that have to be stocked across a mixed-voltage portfolio. Operating frequency is held above 42 kHz to avoid interference with infrared devices and eliminate visible flicker. Power factor stays above 0.98 at full light output and above 0.90 across the dimming range, and total harmonic distortion is held to 10 percent maximum at nominal line voltage and full power.

Before Ordering — Verify
- Confirm lamp count. This ballast operates two lamps in series. A single-lamp or four-lamp fixture requires a different catalog number.
- Confirm the lamp type. This ballast is listed for F54T5/HO, F54T5/HO/49W, FC12T5/HO, and FT55W/2G11. Maximum ballast factor is 1.00 for the F54T5/HO lamps but only 0.80 for FC12T5/HO and FT55W/2G11 — light levels will differ accordingly.
- Confirm the control system supplies a Class 1 or Class 2 low voltage 0-10VDC signal. This ballast does not dim on a line voltage dimmer, and it is not a DALI or phase control device.
- Confirm the control leads will be run correctly: violet is positive, grey is negative. Reversing them or connecting them to mains will drive the ballast to maximum light output.
- Confirm supply voltage is within 120-277V at 50/60 Hz.
- Confirm the coldest expected ambient at the fixture. Minimum starting temperature is 50°F (10°C) for most listed lamps, but 60°F (16°C) for the F54T5/HO/49W energy saving lamp. This is a warm-start ballast and is not suitable for cold applications.
- Confirm the required dimming depth. Relative light output goes to 1% for T5/HO lamps; for T8 and CFL lamps in series operation the published floor is 3%.
- Confirm the enclosure accommodates a 16.70 in long by 1.18 in wide by 1.00 in high case with a 16.34 in mounting length.
- Confirm the fixture case temperature will stay at or below 70°C. The five year warranty is conditioned on that maximum.
- Confirm whether plenum rated construction is required. Philips offers plastic/metal or all metal can construction to meet plenum requirements — verify which applies to this catalog number.
- Confirm lead lengths for the fixture. The lead length table on the manufacturer data sheet is not populated for this catalog number; check with the manufacturer or the e-catalog.
Safety and Installation Guidelines
- Disconnect power at the breaker before removing the old ballast or making any connections.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local requirements.
- Ground the ballast case.
- Follow wiring diagram 56A for F54T5/HO lamps. Black and white are line, red and blue and yellow go to the lamps, violet and grey are the low voltage control circuit.
- Keep the Class 1 or Class 2 low voltage control wiring separated from line voltage wiring in accordance with code.
- Do not connect the low voltage control leads to mains power. The ballast has integral protection and will default to maximum light output, but the connection should be corrected.
- Do not exceed the rated input voltage range.
- Verify all lamps in a fixture are the same type and wattage. Mixing lamp types on one ballast can cause premature failure.
- This ballast operates lamps in series. If one lamp fails, the other will also extinguish. It does not provide independent lamp operation.
- The ballast tolerates sustained open circuit and short circuit output conditions, but faults should be corrected before returning the fixture to service.
- Allow the ballast and fixture to cool before handling after operation.
- Fluorescent lamps contain mercury. Handle and dispose of lamps in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements. This ballast contains no PCBs.
