Product Overview

Philips Advance ICN-2S54-90C — Centium® Programmed Start Electronic Ballast, 2-Lamp T5HO, 120-277V IntelliVolt®
The Philips Advance ICN-2S54-90C is a Centium® programmed start electronic ballast for T5 high output lamps, operating up to 2 lamps on IntelliVolt® 120-277V input at 50/60 Hz. Programmed start circuitry preheats the lamp cathodes before striking, which extends lamp life in frequently switched applications such as occupancy sensor or daylight harvesting control. The ballast includes auto-restrike capability, so lamps restart without cycling power at the panel, and lamp end-of-life (EOL) protection that safely removes power from a lamp on failure. It carries a 90°C maximum case temperature rating for high ambient installations. Minimum starting temperature reaches -20°F (-29°C) for cold applications. It operates 6 different lamp types — see the compatibility table below. Confirm lamp type, lamp count, ballast factor, and supply voltage against the fixture before ordering.

Product Overview
Programmed start ballasts preheat the lamp cathodes to the correct temperature before applying striking voltage. That preheat sequence dramatically reduces the cathode wear that occurs at each start, so lamp life holds up under frequent switching. For T5HO installations this matters more than it does for T8, because high output lamps are expensive to replace and are commonly installed high up in warehouses and high bays where relamping means a lift. Any fixture on an occupancy sensor, a motion detector, or a daylight harvesting control should be on programmed start.
Two features distinguish this Centium family. Auto-restrike means the ballast will restart lamps on its own after a fault clears or a lamp is replaced, without someone having to cycle power at the panel — a real saving in a facility with hundreds of fixtures. End-of-life protection removes power from a lamp that has reached end of life, preventing the overheating and cycling behaviour that a failing T5HO lamp otherwise produces.
IntelliVolt® multiple voltage technology means this one catalog number covers the whole 120-277V range at 50/60 Hz with sustained variation of plus or minus 10 percent. For a distributor or a multi-building facility that reduces the number of ballasts that have to be stocked. Operating frequency is held between 42 kHz and 52 kHz specifically to avoid interference with infrared devices, eliminate visible flicker, and stay clear of electronic article surveillance systems — the anti-theft gates used in retail.
The 90°C maximum case temperature rating suits high ambient installations — enclosed fixtures, high bay applications where heat rises to the ballast, and unconditioned industrial spaces. A standard-rated ballast in the same fixture would be operating outside its thermal limit.
Minimum starting temperature reaches -20°F (-29°C), which makes this ballast suitable for cold applications: unheated warehouses, loading docks, parking structures, and exterior canopy fixtures. Check the coldest expected ambient at the fixture itself, not the room average.

Before Ordering — Verify
- Confirm the lamp type. This ballast is listed for: F54T5/HO (49W); F54T5/HO (54W); FT36W/2G11 36/39W (PL-L36W, F39BX/RS, FT36DL); FT50W/2G11/RS 50W (PL-L50W, F50BX/RS); FT55W/2G11 55W (PL-L55W, F55BX, FT55DL); FC12T5/HO (55W Circline). Input power and ballast factor differ for each — check the row matching your lamps.
- Confirm lamp count. This ballast operates up to 2 lamps. Input power, ballast factor, and line current all change with the number connected.
- Confirm supply voltage is within 120-277V at 50/60 Hz.
- Confirm ballast factor for the intended lamp and lamp count. Substituting a different ballast factor changes light levels in the space.
- Confirm the coldest expected ambient at the fixture is at or above the minimum starting temperature shown for your lamp configuration.
- Confirm whether the 90°C case rating is required. If the fixture does not run hot, a standard rated ballast may be the more economical choice.
- Confirm the enclosure accommodates a Fig. D case, approximately 16.70 in x 1.18 in x 1.00 in.
- Follow the wiring diagram shown for your lamp configuration. For one lamp operation on diagram 73, do not use the yellow leads.
- Confirm lead lengths for the fixture. Philips publishes lead lengths separately in the e-catalog.
Safety and Installation Guidelines
- Disconnect power at the breaker before removing the old ballast or making any connections.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local requirements.
- Ground the ballast case.
- Follow the wiring diagram supplied with the ballast for the lamp count being installed. Wiring differs between 1-lamp, 2-lamp, 3-lamp, and 4-lamp configurations.
- For single lamp operation using wiring diagram 73, do not connect the yellow leads.
- Leads are colour-coded per ANSI C82.11. Do not rely on colour alone — confirm against the diagram on the ballast label.
- Do not exceed the rated input voltage range.
- Verify all lamps in a fixture are the same type and wattage. Mixing lamp types on one ballast can cause premature failure.
- The ballast tolerates sustained open circuit and short circuit output conditions without damage, but faults should still be corrected before returning the fixture to service.
- Allow the ballast and fixture to cool before handling after operation.
- Fluorescent lamps contain mercury. Handle and dispose of lamps in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements. This ballast contains no PCBs.
