TRU-AIM IR lamps achieve their efficacy through thermal recovery. The tungsten halogen capsule is ellipsoidal and carries an infrared reflective coating, so radiated heat that would otherwise be lost is reflected back onto the filament. Because that heat is recycled inside the capsule, less electrical energy is needed to bring the filament to its operating temperature — which is how these lamps reach the centerbeam output that a higher wattage standard dichroic MR16 would require. Sylvania states that TRU-AIM IR lamps are a direct replacement for higher wattage standard dichroic MR16s with a reduction in energy consumption.

The filament is axially aligned between the focal points of the ellipsoidal capsule, with a return lead wire routed back down the center of the filament to optimize infrared reflection without interfering photometrically.
