Product Overview
This is a low frequency square wave ballast, which is the design approach used for metal halide specifically to avoid acoustic resonance in the arc tube. Rather than running the lamp at high frequency the way a fluorescent electronic ballast does, it delivers a low frequency square wave that keeps the arc stable and protects color consistency over lamp life. Microprocessor control handles regulation, and active power factor correction holds power factor above 95% at both 120V and 277V.
The reason this particular model exists is the 120V tap. Many enclosed and outdoor metal halide fixtures use a self-heating integral dual thermal protector, which needs a 120V feed to its heater element regardless of what voltage the ballast itself is running on. This ballast supplies that feed, is compatible with both 3-wire and 4-wire IDTPs, and remains dual voltage rated for 120V or 277V operation when the IDTP is in use. If the fixture has no IDTP, the tap lead is simply capped off and the unit works as a conventional HID ballast anywhere in the 120V to 277V range — so one part number covers both cases.
Protection is layered: end-of-life detection, thermal protection, and an abnormal operation shutdown circuit. Note that the shutdown circuit latches — line voltage has to be cycled to reset it, which is deliberate, since it forces someone to look at the fixture rather than letting it cycle unattended. The unit is cULus listed for outdoor Type 1 use, sound rated A, contains no PCBs, and is RoHS compliant. It mounts on 8-32 studs with top lead exit in a 5.02 by 3.62 by 1.57 inch case.

Before Ordering – Verify
- Confirm the lamp is a 70W metal halide of ANSI type M98, M139, or M143. This ballast is not rated for other wattages or for pulse start types outside those ANSI designations.
- Confirm whether the fixture uses an IDTP. If it does, verify it is a 3-wire or 4-wire self-heating type. If it does not, the tap lead is capped off and the ballast operates normally.
- For remote mounting, confirm the wiring method before ordering. Each lamp’s lead wires must run in a separate conduit of at least 1/2 in. inside diameter, kept apart from the input leads. Extension wiring must use individual, unbundled SF-2 or SFF-2 wire or equivalent. Power cords and MC cable are not acceptable extension wiring methods.

- Confirm the mounting pattern accepts 8-32 studs on 2.0 in. centers with top lead exit.
- Confirm the fixture has clearance for a 5.02 in. x 3.62 in. x 1.57 in. case.

- Confirm the ambient allows starting at or above -15 °C / +5 °F and keeps case temperature at or below 80 °C / 176 °F.
- Note that the warranty period assumes 4,000 operating hours per year; longer duty adjusts the period accordingly.
Safety and Handling Guidelines
- Disconnect power at the breaker before installing, wiring, or replacing the ballast.
- Wire according to the diagram matching your configuration — 3-wire 120V IDTP, 4-wire 120V IDTP, or 3-wire 277V IDTP.
- If no IDTP is used, cap off the tap lead rather than leaving it exposed.
- Run each lamp’s lead wires in a separate minimum 1/2 in. ID conduit, away from the input leads, to achieve rated EMI performance and remote mounting distance.
- Use only individual, unbundled SF-2 or SFF-2 wire or equivalent for extension wiring. Do not use power cords or MC cable.
- If the abnormal operation shutdown circuit trips, correct the underlying fault and cycle line voltage to reset; do not repeatedly reset without investigating.
- Mount so the case stays at or below its 80 °C maximum, and do not obstruct airflow.
- Metal halide lamps operate under pressure and at high temperature; follow the lamp manufacturer’s enclosure and handling requirements.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code and local codes.
